Art Beyond Walls and First City Art Center (FCAC) are joining forces to host the first ever Day of the Dead festival on November 3, opening day of Pensacola’s Foo Foo Fest. The event and pre-event activities will include many different ways to celebrate the Day of the Dead, a traditionally Mexican holiday, that honors family members who have passed away.
Live music, art, altars, face painting, a second-line processional, food trucks, hot glass demos, live story recordings, children’s activities and a Day of the Dead art market will be part of the festivities. Sweet Crude, a New Orleans band, will be the main music act. On the day of the festival, the public is invited to set up temporary alters in various outdoor areas of the festival grounds.
Art Beyond Walls will be creating many different visual elements to the entrance and other areas. Participants are encouraged to wear Day of the Dead attire or bright colors and carry a photo or a memory token of a loved one.
The community is encouraged to bring table-top shrines or installation art, photos or mixed media pieces to remember loved ones. Lighter items can be carried in the procession and later displayed around FCAC.
All art brought the evening of the Day of the Dead must be picked up no later than FRIDAY NOV. 4 by 7:00 P.M.. Any items left will become property of ABW or discarded.
