In memory of the late Janet Knowles, wife of Jazz Pensacola member and benefactor Ralph Knowles, on Nov. 14, Jazz Pensacola presents An Evening of New Orleans Music – Janet Knowles Memorial Jazz Gumbo.
The event features David Sager’s New Orleans Rhythmakers, with an emphasis on early jazz music. Band members are Sager and Charlie Halloran, trombone; Charlie Fardella, trumpet; James Evans, clarinet and C-melody saxophone; Steve Pistorius, keyboard; Tom Saunders tuba and/or string bass; and Hal Smith, drums.
The group is a “Who’s Who” of early traditional jazz: Pistorius has toured Europe and the Pacific and has a long recording history; Saunders’ recording history began in 1965; Evans was born in Wales and has long performing/recording history; Smith has performed at Pensacola JazzFests and events; Fardella has performed at previous Janet Knowles Memorial Jazz Gumbos.
